Taming the Tummy Thunder: Managing Stoma, Ostomy Noises

Living with a stoma, ostomy can bring about a range of adjustments, and one common concern is managing the noises it can produce. Just like a regular bowel, a stoma, ostomy can gurgle, rumble, and yes, even “fart.” While these sounds are perfectly normal, they can sometimes cause anxiety or embarrassment, especially in quiet or social situations. So, what can you do to minimize stoma, ostomy noises and feel more confident?

Dietary Considerations:

What you eat plays a significant role in stoma activity and gas production. Certain foods are known to contribute to increased gas and, consequently, more noise. Common culprits include:

  • Cruciferous Vegetables: Think broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower. These veggies are healthy but can be gas-producing.
  • Legumes: Beans, lentils, and peas are notorious for causing gas.
  • Carbonated Beverages: The bubbles in soda and other fizzy drinks can introduce excess air into your digestive system.
  • High-Fiber Foods: While fiber is important for overall health, too much of it, especially if you’re not used to it, can lead to increased gas.
  • Sugary Foods and Drinks: Excess sugar can ferment in the gut, leading to gas and bloating.

It’s not about eliminating these foods entirely (unless you’ve identified specific triggers), but rather about moderation and mindful eating. Try keeping a food diary to track what you eat and how it affects your stoma. This can help you identify your personal trigger foods.

Eating Habits:

Beyond what you eat, how you eat can also influence stoma noises. Consider these tips:

  • Eat Regularly: Skipping meals can sometimes lead to increased stoma, ostomy activity as your digestive system works harder to process whatever you eventually eat. Regular, balanced meals can help regulate things.
  • Eat Slowly and Chew Thoroughly: Swallowing air while eating is a common cause of gas. Eating slowly and chewing your food well can minimize this.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps with digestion and can prevent constipation, which can contribute to gas and noise.

Other Tips and Tricks:

  • Probiotics: These “good bacteria” can help regulate your gut flora and potentially reduce gas. Again, consult with your doctor before starting any new supplements.
  • Be Prepared: If you’re heading into a situation where you’re concerned about noise, consider emptying your pouch beforehand. This can help minimize the chance of unexpected noises.

Dealing with Noises in Public:

It’s bound to happen sometimes – a noisy stoma, ostomy in a quiet setting. Try not to panic. Most people are understanding, and often, the anxiety about the noise is worse than the noise itself. Here’s what you can do:

  • Don’t Draw Attention to It: Often, the best approach is to simply ignore it. Most people won’t notice or will quickly forget.
  • Acknowledge It with Humor (If Appropriate): If you’re with close friends or family, a lighthearted comment can diffuse the situation. Something like, “My stoma, ostomy is having a party!” or “My stoma, ostomy is playing like a brass band” or if you are more into opera then say that instead, can break the ice and ease any tension.
  • Find a Distraction: If you’re feeling particularly self-conscious, try to subtly shift your position or engage in a conversation to distract yourself and others.

Remember: Stoma, ostomy noises are a normal part of life of living with a bag. While you can take steps to minimize them, it’s important to be kind to yourself and not let the fear of noises control your life. Focus on managing your diet, practicing good eating habits, and developing coping strategies for when noises do occur. You’ve got this!

My Journey: From Diagnosis to Empowerment 💪🌸

Hi, I’m Helinka, and my story began in 2013 when I was diagnosed with bowel cancer. What followed was life-changing—a surgery that left me with an ileostomy.
