Choosing the Right Clothing
The key to dressing with a stoma, ostomy is balance—clothing should be snug enough to keep your bag in place but not so tight that it restricts movement or affects the function of your stoma. Here are some key points to consider:- Avoid overly firm, restrictive clothing. Tight belts, stiff waistbands, or rigid shapewear can put unnecessary pressure on your stoma, ostomy and cause discomfort. Instead, opt for flexible, stretchable fabrics.
- Yes, you can wear jeans! Many people assume jeans are off-limits, but that’s not true. Look for styles with a bit of stretch in the waistband and fabric. High-waisted or mid-rise jeans can be a great choice, as they offer support without pressing too hard on your stoma, ostomy area. It might take some trial and error, but finding the perfect pair is well worth the effort. I have found that wearing my jeans again is such a treat and now I feel confident enough to wear shorts in the warmer months. This is due to wearing the right lingerie, underwear that holds my bag in place. I even wear white shorts how brave it that and you can do this as well.
- Patterned tops can be a game changer. If you feel self-conscious about your tummy area, wearing patterned or mixed coloured tops can help distract the eye. I personally love wearing them because they make me feel confident and stylish while keeping the focus on my overall look—not my bag. Plus I do love to wear colour.
- You don’t have to live in joggers. While joggers and leggings can be incredibly comfortable, they aren’t your only option. With the right lingerie or underwear, you can wear most outfits, from skirts to dresses to fitted trousers.

My Journey: From Diagnosis to Empowerment 💪🌸
