Stoma Skin: Smoother Than a Hairless Cat in Silk Pajamas

So, you’ve joined the stoma squad! Congratulations! And along with your new bodily buddy comes the responsibility of keeping your skin happy as a clam at high tide. But don’t worry, with a bit of knowledge and a dollop of humor, skincare can be a breeze (and less messy than you might think).

Cleanse Like a Baby’s Bottom (But Not With Baby Wipes!)

Harsh soaps? Out! Irritating wipes? Not on our watch! We’re going for gentle, pH-balanced cleansers specifically designed for stoma care. Think of it as treating your skin to a spa day, minus the cucumber slices and awkward conversations.

Dry? It’s a Pat, Pat Situation, Not a Rub-a-Dub-Dub

After cleansing, resist the urge to vigorously towel off. Instead, gently pat the skin around your stoma like you’re befriending a timid little bunny. Your skin will thank you with a sigh of relief, not a pained grimace.

Barrier Products: Your Skin’s Superhero Squad

Think of barrier products like super-powered sidekicks protecting your skin from the villainous irritation caused by output and adhesive. Powders, sealants, and barrier creams are here to defend your epidermal honor!

Use the Right Pouch: It’s Like Cinderella’s Glass Stoma Slipper

A good pouching system is like a perfectly fitting outfit – it flatters your shape and boosts your confidence. But instead of a ball gown, we’re talking a pouch that prevents leaks and keeps your skin comfy. Consult a stoma nurse for a personalized fashion consult.

Change Your Pouch: It’s Not a Marathon, It’s a Relay Race

Don’t push your pouch to its limit! Follow the recommended schedule for changing your ostomy pouch. It’s like a relay race – fresh pouches keep your skin happy and irritation-free for the long run.

Monitor Skin: Become a Superhero Detective for Irritation and Redness

Channel your inner Sherlock Holmes and keep a keen eye on your skin. Look for any signs of irritation, redness, or wounds. Early detection is key to solving the case of the unhappy epidermis.

Eat Right, Hydrate Well: Fuel Your Body for Skin Success

Think of healthy food and water as the ultimate skin fuel. Load up on fruits, veggies, whole grains, and H2O, and watch your skin transform into a radiant masterpiece.

Seek Pro Advice: Sometimes You Need a Skin Guru

If your skin throws a temper tantrum, don’t panic! A stoma nurse or healthcare professional is like a skin guru – they’ll guide you to a peaceful resolution with expert advice and solutions.

Remember, caring for your stoma skin doesn’t have to be a chore. It can be a fun, empowering experience filled with superhero metaphors and smoother-than-silk results. So go forth, pamper your skin, and laugh along the way!

Timely advice and much appreciated. I’m almost at my first stomaversary, and it always amazes me that I still learn every time I ready your blogs. I was just wondering it that fact that my skin is a bit pinker than the skin on my tummy but it is not sore nor are there any signs of infection of pressure sores, just slightly more pink. I am using stoma powder on the area twice a week when I change out. Thanks for the information and the reminders to be gentle with your parastoma skin. Have a great week everyone.
