Why Finding the Right Stoma, Ostomy Bag Matters More Than You Think
Let’s be honest, finding the right stoma, ostomy bag can feel like searching for the perfect pair of jeans. You try a few, think you’ve found the one, and then… something doesn’t feel quite right. But unlike jeans, the right bag isn’t just about comfort, it’s about confidence, security, and peace of mind.
When your bag fits your body shape and size properly, it moves with you, not against you. A well-fitting system reduces leaks, protects your skin, and helps you feel comfortable wearing your favourite clothes again. The size of your bag matters too, they often come in 3 to 4 different sizes, smaller bags are great for those with a more frequent emptying routine or a colostomy, while larger bags suit an ileostomy or urostomy where output is more frequent.
Then there’s the open vs. closed debate.
🔹 Closed bags are often best for colostomies where output is more formed, you simply remove and replace them.
🔹 Open bags, with an emptying outlet, are ideal for ileostomies or urostomies where you need to drain the bag several times a day.
You may also need a seal, ring, or paste around your stoma, ostomy. These create a snug, flexible barrier between your skin and the bag, reducing leaks, protecting skin, and helping everything stay in place. Think of them as your bag’s best friends!
I personally use rings as me a paste that ends up in a right pickle. more on my hands than on my tummy lol. So I now cut a ring in half then into three pieces which fit great into my creases and no sticky hands.

Now, let’s talk about the flange shape: a detail that makes a huge difference.
👉 A flat flange sits smoothly on the skin and works well if your stoma, ostomy sticks out (protrudes) slightly from your tummy.
👉 A convex flange, on the other hand, has a gentle curve that helps push the stoma forward. It’s a game changer if your stoma is flush with the skin or dips inward, as it creates a better seal and reduces the risk of leaks.
It’s not about one being better, it’s about what’s best for your body shape and stoma type.

Finally, the choice between a 1-piece or 2-piece system comes down to convenience and comfort.
🌿 A 1-piece combines the baseplate and bag in one, perfect for those who like simplicity. For when you first have an ostomy, stoma fitted this one piece is so much better for you to adjust to.
🌿 A 2-piece lets you change the bag while keeping the baseplate on for a few days, ideal if your skin as it allows your skin to be not disturbed as much plus if the flange has healing properties to it they are absorbed better into your skin.
Personally I use a two piece and the reason being that I can change the bag sizes to fit my needs. So during the day I will wear a mini bag and at night I will wear a maxi and with doing this I am able to sleep 6/8 hours undisturbed. For me that is a result.
✨ Remember, your stoma, ostomy journey is unique and so is your perfect bag setup. Don’t be afraid to experiment, ask for samples, and get advice from your stoma nurse. You deserve to feel secure, confident, and comfortable every single day.

My Journey: From Diagnosis to Empowerment 💪🌸
Hi, I’m Helinka, and my story began in 2013 when I was diagnosed with bowel cancer. What followed was life-changing a surgery that left me with an ileostomy. Like many others in my position, I faced challenges that affected not only my physical health but also my confidence, mental well-being, and sense of identity.
At first, I struggled to embrace this new reality. I didn’t just want to live with a stoma, ostomy; I wanted to thrive. But finding products that made me feel confident, beautiful, and empowered was almost impossible. So, I decided to create them myself. ✂️💖
Crafting Confidence: Lingerie with a Purpose
Today, I design and make specialised stoma, ostomy lingerie and wraps that are not just functional but also elegant, sexy, and pretty. Every piece is thoughtfully created to help people feel more like themselves again. These aren’t just garments they’re statements of self-love, empowerment, and beauty.
Supporting Beyond Style: Clinical Hypnotherapy
My journey didn’t stop at designing lingerie. I became a clinical hypnotherapist to support others living with a stoma, ostomy. I understand the mental and emotional hurdles from anxiety and grief to PTSD and I’ve made it my mission to help people overcome them. Through hypnotherapy, I guide my clients to rebuild confidence, manage stress, and embrace the incredible lives they deserve.
