Why specialist mentoring, therapy, and coaching matter when you live with a stoma, ostomy

When people hear you’ve had your stoma, ostomy surgery, the first thing they often say is, “Well, at least the pain has gone,” or “You must feel so much better now.”
And in many ways, that is true. The surgery can save your life. It can remove the constant trips to the loo, the agony, the fear of not making it in time.

But here is the part that many people don’t see.

The surgery isn’t the end of the story.
It is the start of a completely new chapter.

Suddenly, there is a bag stuck to your tummy. It makes noises at the most inconvenient moments. It can smell. It can leak. It can knock your confidence sideways. You may worry about intimacy, about clothes, about going out, about being “found out.”

And no one really prepares you for the emotional side of it all.

“You’re fine now” isn’t always how it feels

From the outside, you look “better.”
But on the inside, you might be dealing with:

  • Anxiety about leaks
  • Embarrassment about noises
  • Grief for the body you once had
  • Fear of being intimate
  • Worry about leaving the house
  • Feeling different from everyone else

These feelings are real, and they are valid. Yet many people feel they have to hide them because everyone assumes the surgery has fixed everything.

That is where specialist support becomes so important.

The difference with someone who truly understands

Generic coaching or therapy can be helpful. It can give you tools, mindset shifts, and coping strategies. I experienced that myself and it did support me in some ways.

But there was always something missing.

There was no deep understanding of what it is like to:

  • Panic because your bag has ballooned in a quiet room
  • Sit through a meeting while your stoma, ostomy decides to perform its own trumpet solo
  • Smell something and immediately wonder, “Is that me?”
  • Feel terrified about being close to someone again

A specialist mentor or therapist who lives with a stoma, ostomy doesn’t just understand this intellectually. They understand it emotionally, physically, and practically.

They’ve been there.
They’ve felt it.
They’ve lived through the awkward, the embarrassing, and the funny moments too.

Yes, there are funny moments

Because let’s be honest, sometimes life with a stoma, ostomy is like living with a mischievous toddler attached to your belly.

It doesn’t care if you’re in a silent lift.
It doesn’t care if you’re on a first date.
It certainly doesn’t care if you’re in the middle of a serious conversation.

It just goes, “Pfffft.”

And there you are, trying to look thoughtful and intelligent while silently praying the noise stops.

These moments, as embarrassing as they feel, are also part of the shared experience. When you talk to someone who has lived it, you can laugh together instead of feeling ashamed.

Real empathy changes everything

When your mentor or therapist truly understands life with a stoma, ostomy:

  • You don’t have to explain the basics
  • You don’t feel judged
  • You don’t feel like the “odd one out”
  • You can speak openly about fears and embarrassments
  • You feel seen, heard, and understood

That level of empathy creates a safe space. And in that safe space, real healing and confidence can grow.

It’s not all doom and gloom

Yes, life with a stoma, ostomy can be challenging. There are difficult days. There are awkward moments. There are fears to work through.

But there is also:

  • Freedom from constant pain
  • Energy to enjoy life again
  • The chance to travel, laugh, and love
  • A deeper appreciation for your body and your life
  • A new strength you never knew you had

With the right support, you can move from just coping… to truly living.

The power of being guided by someone who’s walked the path

A specialist mentor, therapist, or coach doesn’t just give advice. They offer:

  • Real-life understanding
  • Practical solutions
  • Emotional support
  • Gentle guidance through the hard days
  • Hope based on lived experience

They show you that life with a stoma, ostomy isn’t the end.
It’s simply a different way of living.

And it can still be a beautiful, joyful and meaningful life.

If you’re struggling with the emotional side of life with a stoma, ostomy, you don’t have to do it alone. Look for support from someone who truly understands the journey because that understanding can make all the difference.

My Story Short & Real 💪

I’m Helinka. In 2013, bowel cancer and surgery left me with an ileostomy. Life with a stoma, ostomy didn’t just change my body, it rocked my confidence, mindset, and sense of who I was.

I didn’t want to just “get by.” I wanted to feel good in my body again. When I couldn’t find anything that helped me feel confident or feminine, I made it myself.

Now I design specialised stoma, ostomy lingerie and support people emotionally as a clinical hypnotherapist, helping calm anxiety, rebuild confidence, and feel safe in their bodies again.

You are not alone. And life can still feel good 💖
