āAre you drinking enough water⦠or are you mistaking dry skin for dry humour?ā š
Living with a stoma, ostomy changes a lot and one of the biggest things people donāt talk about enough is hydration. Especially if youāve got an ileostomy, hydration isnāt just a āgood ideaā itās essential self-care.
Hereās why: the large bowel is where water is absorbed, but when you have an ileostomy, that bitās bypassed. Your output comes from the small bowel, which means itās much runnier Ā more fluids are lost every day.

How can you tell youāre dehydrated?
It often starts subtly:
- Dry mouth? Thatās your first red flag š© take a drink as soon as you feel it.
- Over time, your skin might get dry and itchy. And letās be real, no amount of cream will replace what a glass of water can do.
- You might feel foggy, wobbly on your feet, or even low in mood. Hydration affects everything from balance to brain clarity.
š” Tip: Drinking water is better than chasing symptoms with lip balm and moisturisers. Prevention is easier than fixing dehydration once it’s taken hold. I have a big glass of water or juice near me during the day so when it catches my eye I take a drink. You can have one of these bottles which shows you how much you have had to drink, some have great quotes on them to remind you to drink.
Ā
What are the benefits?
ā Clearer thinking
ā Fewer dizzy spells
ā Healthier skin from the inside out
ā More energy
ā Less chance of falls or imbalance
This isnāt just about drinking water itās about protecting your whole body and mind.
