The Importance of a Good Night’s Sleep When Living with a Stoma, Ostomy

We all know the magic of a good night’s sleep—it’s essential for our health, well-being, and mental clarity. But when you live with a stoma, ostomy, achieving quality sleep can feel challenging. With the possibility of waking up for a trip to empty your bag, uninterrupted sleep may seem like a luxury. Why Sleep Matters

Sleep plays a crucial role in your body’s ability to heal, manage stress, and maintain a positive mindset. For those living with a stoma, ostomy, sleep isn’t just about resting; it’s about helping your body adjust to changes and manage anxiety or fatigue. Tips for Better Sleep

1.Plan Ahead for Nighttime Care: Waking up to empty your stoma, ostomy bag is a reality, but you can minimize disruption. Try wearing a larger capacity bag for nighttime use. This can give you longer stretches of uninterrupted sleep and help you avoid multiple trips to the bathroom. If you’re using a two-piece system, switching to a larger bag is straightforward and can make a big difference. 2.Establish a Nighttime Routine: Consistent bedtime habits signal your body that it’s time to wind down. Consider gentle activities like reading, meditating, or a short body scan to relax your muscles. These routines can help lower stress and prepare your body for sleep, even if you anticipate waking up during the night. Making sure that you don’t eat too late into the evening as this will keep your stoma, ostomy busy early into your sleep which in turn means you will be up a couple more times.

3.Positioning Matters: Find a comfortable sleep position that doesn’t put pressure on your stoma, ostomy. Side sleeping with support pillows or a slightly elevated position can help you stay comfortable and reduce the risk of leaks. If you were like me who used to sleep on my tummy this is one hell of a change. At first this just confused my body as it wasn’t used to sleeping on my sides but I have found that having a pillow either side of me has really helped me to find a good position that works for me now. So one of the pillows is to support me back and the other is used between my knees to take the pressure off my tummy. Have you tried this?

After battling through surgery and treatment, I received a second chance at life, but it came with a new reality—a permanent ileostomy. Navigating the emotional and physical challenges of living with a stoma was not easy, but it has shaped me into the person I am today: resilient, compassionate, and determined to help others on similar journeys.
